Ah, it's time I start using this journal again!
For my first post I deliver to you the brand new video from George Strait.
Oh yes, can't forget... CONGRATULATIONS GEORGE STRAIT!
I look forward to seeing a rerun of the awards sometime soon!
Have you ever been really cold and then wrapped a nice warm blanket around yourself? For the first second doesn't it make all your problems go away??? You just feel so content in a soft, warm blanket wrapped around you tightly. I love at night when it gets cold because I pull out my giant fleece canuck blanket and just wrap it around me.
Anyways, there are few things that can give you that same feeling, one of those is George Strait music for me. His voice just makes me feel so safe and content. Well today was the release date for his new cd It All Comes Natural.
I had originally saved enough to buy it, and I was getting excited. Last week at work I was telling a co-worker about it and one of my regulars got into the conversation. He comes in around eleven every night with his partner (they do the Brinks security bank runs) and gets something to eat... and I always remember him. He likes tomatoes on his egg salad sandwhich, and gets an extra large steeped tea, three sugar, three milk, and a bowl of soup. Tomato parmasean if we have it.
Well, Sunday night he came in. It was my first night on after a couple days off (I get Fridays & Saturday's off) and he mentioned how excited I must be getting. Unfortunately I had decided to buy a bra when I went to Courtenay with Shelly this weekend because my only good one had a broken strap, so I told him unexpected expenses had come up and I probably couldn't get it until my next paycheque. *sigh*
Well last night he came in and when I had finished up his order he handed me this little card (think credit card type card). I looked at it, it was a $20 gift card to Zeller's. "I asked them and they assured me that would be enough for your cd," he told me. I was speechless. I told him I couldn't take it but he insisted. "I never leave a tip but you deserve one, take it." He refused to take it back. Said if I made him take it back he would just leave it on the table once he was done eating (he knows I do lobby before I leave.)
So yes, I took it. This morning I slept through my alarm for school, damn, but when I woke up I quickly got dressed, shot out the door and got my butt to Zellers. Sure enough it was enough for my cd, so now I'm the proud owner of George Strait's new cd!
It's the best cd I've heard from him in ages. It's got such a different and distinct sound to it, it's absolutely amazing. And it has fifteen song on it. Doesn't seem that long ago we couldn't get more then ten songs from George, I love how times change!
Now I feel obliged to do a little cd review because, hey, it's George!
Give It Away - Oh yes, the first single. I remember hearing this song and thinking it had a bit different sound to it but I didn't think it would mean a different sound for the whole album. I love how low he goes, George does great low vocals when he tries! And it sounds like he put a lot into the song, it just sounded so fresh... not like he'd been doing this for 25 years.
She Told Me So - This song reminds me of Ocean Front Property, a George hit from twenty years ago. The point of that song was he was trying to convince this girl that she wasn't everything to him... and if she bought that he went on to say he had ocean front property in Arizona. Well this song is kind of the reverse, his wife is tellling him he's her everything and that this other guy is "like a brother", and he sings, "There's roses blooming in the Artic circle/Icebergs in the Gulf of Mexico/And there's not one star in Heaven/Or a sunrise every morning/I'd believe it if she told me so"
That's My Kind Of Woman - I really like this song. I don't know why but my favourite part is when he mentions Gus from Lonesome Dove. He was always my favourite! His voice sounds so great on this though, real raw and real. Not surprisingly this is a Dean Dillon song.
Wrapped - I don't know how to describe the feel of this album but I love it. I think part of it is the musical aspect is real laid back, and it's all about George. You don't see a lot of that anymore. It's really prominent on this song though, his vocals are the focus of every aspect on the song. It's a fun tune with a great melody too.
It Just Comes Natural - I don't know if it's just me, but I always have high expectations of the title track. I'm sure a lot of times people choose a title track just 'cause the name sums up the album, not the song... but I think the song should. This isn't the best song on the album by far, and I wasn't expecting it to be a love song. It is a fun song though, with a great sound an awesome bridge, and the name does sum up George I think.
He Must Have Really Hurt You Bad - Wow sums up this song. George's voice is amazing. Have I mentioned how strong his vocal performance is on this album? And the lyrics are so strong... wow. Kudos to Tim Johnson for such an awesome song.
A Heart Like Hers - I love the idea behind this song but I don't really like the way it's done. Sorry, even George doesn't do everything perfectly. I just hate songs that go la la la laaa la la la laaaaa la la la laaa.
Why Can't I Leave Her Alone - This is quite possibly my favourite song on the whole cd! The lyrics are awesome and George sounds fantastic. The cd is worth buying for this song alone.
One Foot In Front Of The Other - This is such a nice, upbeat song. It's fun... it sounds like George is having fun singing it to!
I Ain't Her Cowboy Anymore - This is the saddest song on the cd! My cd booklet is missing a page so I don't have the lyrics to this song, I wish I did. I CAN NOT FINISH THIS SONG! It's beautiful, but I find my eyes burning after the first verse and I just have to change it. I don't remember ever doing that with a George song before. I wish I could read the lyrics and know what was happening with the song.
Texas Cookin' - Oh my God!!! I can't believe he recorded this song. I LOVE THIS SONG! It's so upbeat and fun, it just makes me wanna dance and sing along.
A Better Rain - Not my favourite song. It's alright, just nothing about it sticks out except the fiddle at the end.
How 'Bout Them Cowgirls - This is a fun song, and it sounds awesome. It's another one where the fiddle has a strong presence, I love the fiddle... but anyways this song kicks ass. It's got such a great feel... I highly recommend anyone who gets this album to listen to this song first.
What Say - Wow, I like this song. I understand the title but it still strikes me as odd. I love the idea... let's beat the odds and stay together....
Come On Joe - I like the beginning of this song... I don't know why but it pulls me in. The lyrics start out really strong and catch your attention. It startes out slow and picks up... it's an awesome end to such an awesome cd!
If I had to find a way to describe the cd I would say traditional sounding with a modern feel.
As if this isn't good enough today I got an e-mail with a password for the pre-sale of Dierks Bentley, Eric Church and Doc Walker tickets and my uncle agreed to buy me two tickets! I am so freaking excited!!!!!
There aren't a lot of singers that can make me just sit back and relax, but there are a few. Sometimes I find myself completely immursing myself in one particular artists music. Usually it's George Strait... I grew up idolizing him and escaping in his music. To this day any song by him will take me back to that special spot where it feels like nother can hurt me.
Then there's Phil Vassar. I don't find Phil to be a particularly gifted artist persay, but he's an incredibly songwriter. His lyrics and melodies make up for any lack in his vocal performance (and it's not like he's terrible, just somewhat average).
Right now though, it's Collin Raye. I don't know why, but the other day I started playing one of his cd's and I just kept putting on more and more of his music. My Windows Media Player is all Collin as is my mp3 player. I've been a fan of his forever, and have always found his voice very soothing, but right now it's more than that. It's the songs and the melodies and everything else as well. His music is something you can just put on real low and go about your day doing whatever you need to do.
I've had an extremely stressful few days. Mechanics at Canadian Tire scammed me out of a bunch of money and left my car worse off then when I took it in, my mom is being a stressful bitch and my shoulder has been killing me. I had to take off this next week from work 'cause today I had to go get shots for my shoulder. It was cortizone and something else. I dunno, I wasn't paying attention. Probably should have but hindsight is 20/20. Anyways, they gave me four shots, two of each. On in my shoulder and one in my elbow.
My whole left arm is numb, except my elbow which hurts like you would believe. I have a tensor bandage on that, and am supposed to be wearing a splint on my arm. I do when I go out, but it's incredibly uncomfortable. Because my arm is numb I can't feel if I hurt it, and it keeps getting these really bad twitches which is why it's protected. It hurts so bad right now though. Damn doctors.
So anyways, I'm escaping with Collin Raye's music. There isn't a single song of his that I don't enjoy, I never skip anything on any cd. I feel good when I hear his music, I find it completely relaxes me. It's nice to have something like that.
